So enjoy a few pictures.
This is Bob. He is the sweetest and reminds me so much of Charlie.
The garden has been expanded and mowed. I just have a bit more weed eating to do.
Garlic has been harvested. Soft neck has been braided, but hardneck is curing.
Abby is learning to drive the tractor.
As usual, Sundays are our work day since Al works five days a week and the sabbath we rest. It is so hard to pay attention to how long I am outside, so I ended up sunburned again. But I have found that tallow is the best for it. No peeling at all!
While we were pulling up electric netting near the woods, I must have stepped in a tick nest. I had seed ticks crawling all over me. Now I am not a huge fan of deet, but you can believe I was running for the 40% deet and spraying it on my clothes to slow those little things down. Al said I must have picked off at least twenty ticks from my clothes. Later in the house I found five or so more hidden in the folds of my knot skirt and YES, one had fixed itself on my back. I hate those things!
Because we had to remove the brush pile and rescue my compost from the chickens, I have chickens and turkeys all over creation. It is highly frustrating, but not much I can do. We are hoping they all go in tonight.
Well, you just got a very condensed version of my "lost blog". I am trying not to overwhelm you with blog updates, so I end up with so much to say I lose it all.
Have a blessed week!
Next time try writing your blog in an email. Google will save the draft every few minutes. Then just copy/paste to the blog...
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't the writing that was the problem. It was the adding pictures.
DeleteThat’s so frustrating and one reason I quit blogging. My neighbors in Illinois had guineas to help with the ticks. Have you tried them yet? I don’t remember if you did back in Virginia. The gardens look amazing. The garlic braids are beautiful. What do you mean soft and hard in reference to the garlic?!
ReplyDeleteThere are soft neck and hard neck varieties of garlic. This means that the stem is either soft or hard. The hard neck has a stick that goes up through the center, which I believe is formerly the scape. Hard neck garlic can not be braided.
DeleteI kind of liked seeing the chickens roaming in the first picture…I also thought the garlic braids beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGreat that Abby is learning how to drive the tractor! Be sure she learns how too unload the bucket! I never learned that and had a disaster. I threw windfall apples in it to give to the pigs- got the bucket up high enough to get over the fence and figured out how to tip it down so the apples fell into the hog-yard…bug how it the world do you bring the bucket back up? I could not get it up, and finally thought if I just back up, the fence would make it tilt back up. !!! Wrong! I pulled the fence down, broke the posts off at ground level and the pigs escaped all over the yard! Can you imagine how pleased H was to get my call about needing him to come home pronto! -Aunt M
I enjoy your stories. Thanks.
DeleteReally beautiful pictures
ReplyDeleteThanks Jared! Hope you are all well.
DeleteHopefully all the birds went in. You needed andrew there to round themup. Or train one of the fogs to shepherd them. Stop using your phone for blog updates!
ReplyDeleteMost of them went into the proper pen. One turkey hen decided to sleep in the woods, but we caught her and brought her in. Then we caught the hens that went to the old coop. This morning we realized that somehow our second rooster, Hawk, ended up in the duck pen. Not sure how he got in there, but at least he was safe. We moved him this morning.
DeleteI cant live where there are ticks like that.... roaming chickens are happy chickens.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! I love free range chickens. I just have too many right now. I found out last night that my chickens have mites something fierce which may be impacting my egg production. I need to treat them.
DeleteNo! How frustrating!
ReplyDeleteWe just harvested are first ever garlic scapes and ate them with scrambled eggs, spaghetti sauce and sandwiches. I’m excited to see how big our garlic will be in another month.
How exciting! I probably should have harvested the scapes and encouraged the growth. I ended up with small bulbs.
DeleteUGHHH the ticks are horrifying and NOPE to the tick nextðŸ˜
